San Pietro in Vincoli

The Church was founded in the fifth century by the Empress, Eudossia, in order to host a precious relic, the chain with which St Peter’s body was bound when a prisoner in Jerusalem. The construction was rebuilt in the thirteenth century. Further work was carried out in the sixteenth century (the façade and arcade) and in the eighteenth century (the interior). The relic has remained at all times where it had been originally placed. To this day, it lies under the main altar and is shown to the faithful on 1 August every year.

St. Joseph ‘‘the Carpenter’’ and Carcer Tullianum

Carcer Tullianum It is located below the Church of St. Joseph ‘‘the Carpenter’’ – dated sixteenth century – it faces at the Roman Forum, one of the most impressive views of the city. The complex consists of two distinct parts: the Carcer, the upper level, which dates from the seventh century. B.C. and Tullianum, the lower level, which dates back to the sixth century.a.C. The Tullianum waters were left to die the enemies of the Roman people, including some major historical figures, like Vercingetorix, the prince and leader of Gallia (Gaul).

Capitoline Museums

Founded in 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated a number of bronze statues to the people of Rome, they are the oldest public museums in the world. The collection or art works and archaeological relics are housed in two buildings which, together with Palazzo Senatorio, flank Michelangelo’s magnificent Piazza del Campidoglio: the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo.
